Jack Farlow, a second-year Biomedical Engineering student at the University of Waterloo set a record for the Olympic Total for a 27th place finish at the 2023 CrossFit Games.

Farlow entered the competition as the second-youngest and only student competitor among the 40 athletes in the men’s individual category. After six events, he avoided the first round of cuts by securing a spot in the top 30 with a second overall finish in event 4. The gruelling workout called ‘The Alpaca Redux’ includes pushing a weighted sled, legless rope climbs, and performing weightlifting movements with kettlebells, all under a time limit.

Farlow left his mark with a first-place finish in event 9, the Olympic Total. The workout is scored by combining the weight of two different lifts, with only two attempts per lift. Farlow's leaderboard position meant he lifted first in each round, giving the competitors the opportunity to beat his numbers. Overcoming all odds, he set a record of 701 lbs for the event and edged out the next-best competitor by 21 lbs.

Farlow finished the 2023 CrossFit Games in 27th place with 332 points.
