Exploring pathways to further education
By: Mary Lynne Bartlett (she/her)
The question,“what’s next after graduation?” sparks endless possibilities. At Waterloo, you have access to a wide range of resources to help them answer this question.
The Centre for Career Development (CCD) and other campus supports empower you to dream big and imagine how further education can transform your future and shape a meaningful career. We have resources such as career advising and workshops, online tools and large school events like the further education fair.
During career advising appointments, past students expressed interest in engaging directly with academic program representatives to gain firsthand insight into postgraduate opportunities. To address this desire, we began offering a Further Education Fair(the fair). The fair reflects our commitment to exposing you to a wide range of professional possibilities and connects you directly with school representatives. The fair has been running for 13 years, and this year’s fair featured 70 schools representing over 100 programs, with hundreds of students in attendance.
Although the fair is an annual in-person event, we have supports and resources about Further Education opportunities, including professional and graduate school programs, available year-round. If you missed this year’s fair, there are other ways to continue your exploration of graduate, post-graduate and professional schools.
Here are four options for getting further education support.
1. Explore and apply
As you start to think about what’s next on your career journey, you may think about meeting with a career advisor to explore your options.Further Education:Applying appointment is a great opportunity to gather essential information to make the best decision that’s right for you. You’ll meet with a career advisor who can help you review programs and institutions, confirm eligibility requirements and get answers to program-specific questions. The appointment can also cover application processes for various streams, pathways or degrees, as well as funding options available to support your studies. This approach helps ensure you have the resources and guidance you need to make informed decisions about your future education.
2. Interviewing
If you’re at the stage of preparing for a further education interview, we have you covered. Further Education: Interviewing appointments are designed to help you prepare effectively for professional school interviews. During this session, you can practice responding to common interview questions, review interview formats and strategies and learn techniques for managing interview anxiety. The appointment also provides guidance on how to appropriately disclose sensitive information during interviews.
Career advisors are ready to support you in exploring your options. And it’s free for current students.
Advisors can assist with questions like:
-
Is further education the right path for me?
-
What program is right for me?
-
What is the application process like, and when do I need to apply?
-
What kind of careers can I pursue after completing the program?
