CHEM 224L

Analytical Instrumentation Laboratory

This course consists of a 6-hour weekly lab period, with both Chem 220 and Chem 220L as prerequisites. Students will work individually for 5 “wet” labs and in pairs for 6 instrumental experiments. Experiments are designed to give students the opportunity to learn and improve upon the analytical skills gained in Chem 220L, while also increasing their ability to understand and critically assess analytical results. Several “unknown” samples will be analyzed with an emphasis on precision and accuracy. Methods of analysis include volumetric titrations, gravimetric analysis, spectrophotometry, ion chromatography (IC), gas chromatography (GC-FID, GC-MS), liquid chromatography (HPLC, LC-MS), fluorometry, solid phase microextraction (SPME), and quality control of compounded pharmaceutics. The importance of proper scientific documentation will be stressed.
