Organic Chemistry 2
CHEM 265 is a continuation of the study of organic chemistry begun in CHEM 264. (CHEM 266 can sometimes be used as a prereq.) Included is an introduction to the use of mass spectrometry (MS), infrared (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C NMR) spectroscopy in the determination of the structures of organic molecules. The chemistry of carbonyl containing compounds such as aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and carboxylic acid derivatives are discussed. The concept of aromaticity and the reactivity of aromatic compounds in electrophilic and nucleophilic aromatic substitutions will be introduced. In addition, the synthesis and reactivity of amines will be presented. The emphasis of this course is on the development of problem-solving skills in the context of structure elucidation, synthesis and mechanism of reactions of organic compounds.
