CHEM 200

Introduction to Lab Techniques

This course has a laboratory and a seminar component. The laboratory portion is designed to introduce students to experimental laboratory techniques used in the synthesis-related disciplines in chemistry (biochemistry, inorganic, medicinal, polymer, and organic). The techniques covered include: single-channel pipetting, distillation, recrystallization, chromatography, and liquid-liquid extraction. The lab sessions will also implement the scientific method through experimental design and implementation, data analysis and reflection. Students will work in partners in the lab and attend the lab every other week. The seminar component will introduce the laboratory techniques, laboratory notebooks, study skills, databases such as SciFinder and Reaxys, critically evaluating information, writing skills such as: referencing and citations, various writing tasks, and peer review. The seminar is held weekly.
