The University of Waterloo's Sustainable Futures Initiative launch eventbrings together the Water Institute, Waterloo Climate Institute, and the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy to catalyze holistic approaches to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on the interconnections between energy, climate and water. 

Join Waterloo’s COP27 delegates for a discussion on the crucial issues that need to be tackled at the upcoming international climate change negotiations and Canada’s role. This will also be a chance to learn about the expertise that each of the delegates brings to the table, spanning topics of health, governance, energy, and communications.

Join Climate Students, the Waterloo Climate Institute's student-led group, for lunch and an opportunity to meet your peers who work on, or study, climate change across Waterloo's six faculties. This is a chance to step outside of your academic/research focus to foster interdisciplinary connections. 

Join Dr. Mary-Louise Timmermans, Damon Wells Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Yale University, for a presentation about how the Arctic Ocean’s Beaufort Gyre is a dominant feature of the Arctic system, a prominent indicator of climate change, and possibly a control factor for high-latitude climate.

SDG Week Canada is happening from March 6-10, 2023, led by the Sustainability Hub at UBC, SDSN Canada, and Colleges and Institutes Canada.  Campuses across the country are leading programming and communications to raise awareness about the SDGs, spark conversations about opportunities for collaboration within and across campus borders, and accelerate progress on the SDGs in post-secondary institutions.

SDG Week Activities at Waterloo

There is lots of work underway at the University of Waterloo to advance the SDGs, through our teaching and research, campus operations, and engagement programming. 

Many departments and groups across campus will be leading activities during SDG Week to showcase their unique contributions.

Climate Students is hosting a movie night on March 9th from 5:30-7:30pm in the Grad Lounge in SLC 3216.

Please join us on April 27th at 2:00pm for an exciting lineup of expert panelists as they discuss their perspectives on Canada's Adaptation Strategy. 

The FAUW Climate Justice Working Group and Climate Institute are hosting an informal 1.5-hour workshop with authors of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on May 10th. 

Join Climate Students on Thursday, May 25th at 6:30PM for a screening of "A Burning Question: Propaganda & the Denial of Climate Change". There will be FREE snacks for those attending.

The 2023 Summer School will showcase leading-edge research from a wide array of University of Waterloo professors at the interface of water, climate, and energy.
