Join WatCISL members Vanessa Schweizer, Juan Moreno-Cruz, Burgess Langshaw Power, Hope Elizabeth Tracey, Kasra Motlaghzadeh, and Stephanie Rose Cortinovis at the 2024 Earth Systems Governance forum: Re-imagining Earth System Governance in an Era of Polycrisis.
The lab co-organized two virtual panels: the first in association with the Working Group on Carbon Removal and the second with ESG's Taskforce on Knowledge Cumulation. Registration is free!
The forum will offer an accessible and lively space for joint discussions on the newest insights and ideas that underlie earth system governance and inform global sustainability transitions in the wake of multiple ongoing global crises.
Exploring the Interplay of Pragmatism and Idealism: Insights from Projects on Carbon Removals
A Session featuring Sven Alsheimer , Dr. Elisabeth Dütschke , Stephanie Rose Cortinovis MES , Dr. Vanessa Schweizer , Dr. Anne Kantel , Prof. Wil Burns , Dr. Elisa Guasti , Hope Elizabeth Tracey and Celina Scott-Buechler
Organized by Working Group on Carbon Removal
This group discussion explores the nuanced interplay between pragmatism and ideal techno-economic scenarios, moving beyond theoretical modelling to consider societal acceptability. By analysing real-world implementation and pilot projects, the discussion examines carbon removal strategies in the broader context of the climate change agenda within the Sustainable Development Goals and climate targets. By addressing practical challenges and exploring strategies to increase societal uptake, participants will gain valuable insights to chart sustainable pathways towards a more inclusive and resilient future. To stimulate interesting debates, the sessions will be structured around input presentations from early career researchers and commentaries from different perspectives.

Knowledge Cumulation Needs for Managing Overshoot of the Paris Agreement
A Session featuring Dr. Tyler Felgenhauer , Burgess Langshaw Power and Dr. Vanessa Schweizer
Organized by Taskforce on Knowledge Cumulation
What happens when countries fail to meet their climate targets to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius? This interactive panel will tackle the potential necessity of governing climate interventions and key governance challenges and knowledge cumulation needs in the implementation of climate interventions. Climate interventions are a group of technologies which could be used to address the ‘overshoot’ of temperature targets, atmospheric CO2 levels, and other effects of climate change. The session is intended to provide a high-level overview of the risks, co-benefits, and necessity of carbon dioxide removals (CDR) and other climate interventions as part of the climate action toolkit.
