Researchers at the University of Waterloo have helped to develop a toolkit that will help municipalities, experts and community members to plan smart cities together.

The new toolkit launched by the City as a Platform Lab at Waterloo along with their US collaborators will help communities use data and technology to improve efficiency, sustainability, economic development and quality of life in urban areas.

Don Cowan, distinguished professor emeritus, Cheriton School of Computer Science, received a CANARIE Award to further develop a software platform Cowan created with his research team called iEnvironment++. The platform supports environmental science and engineering research on surface water by providing researchers with the ability to access and share environmental data and best practices.

Ten University of Waterloo researchers, whose research is deemed on the verge of a breakthrough, will receive supplemental funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).

The recipients of Discovery Accelerator Supplements (DAS) are among more than 100 researchers at Waterloo who are receiving funding through Discovery Grants, Research Tools and Instruments grants, and Postgraduate and Postdoctoral fellowships.

Civil and environmental engineering professor Peter Huck has been awarded a renewal of his Industrial Chair (IRC) in water treatment by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) for the fifth time in 25 years; making it the longest running IRC. With this renewal, Huck will receive more than $3 million in funding, over five years, from NSERC and 17 Canadian industry partners to continue his water treatment research program.
