Privacy through Contextual Integrity: From Theory to Applications

Abstract:

In this talk, Yan will discuss using the theory of Contextual Integrity (CI) to build socio-technical systems that incorporate a socially meaningful conception of privacy. He will discuss CI-based methods for identifying contextual privacy norms and examining how these norms may differ from policies and regulations. Furthermore, Yan will present their recent work on evaluating and designing privacy-preserving systems that respect users’ privacy by ensuring that underlying information flows align with social norms and expectations.

Yan Shvartzshnaider is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Lassonde School of Engineering at York University, where he leads the Privacy Rhythm research lab. His research interests include sociotechnical systems that incorporate a socially meaningful conception of privacy that meets peoples’ expectations and is ethically defensible.
