New threats often require new solutions. BlackBerry’s vice-president of advanced technology development, Sarah Tatsis, explains the importance of collaboration between researchers and industry professionals to meet privacy challenges head-on and strengthen cybersecurity.

Networking Break | 10:30 a.m.

Build connections with researchers and meet industry leaders over coffee.

Does Privacy Exist in the Digital Age? | 10:45 a.m.

Sociologist and legal studies expert, Jennifer Whitson, leads a discussion on the legal and technological safeguards protecting our private data and explores whether we need to do more.

Tech for Good | 11:45 a.m.

How do we integrate values into technology? Marcel O’Gorman, professor and director of Waterloo’s Critical Media Lab, shares how we can infuse ethics into our thinking about digital technologies to produce positive social outcomes and increase user trust.

Lunch | 12 p.m.

Can the Internet be Saved? | 1 p.m.

Tyson Macaulay, chief product officer at Infosec Global, leads a discussion with fellow global industry experts on the future of the internet and what successful cybersecurity will look like 10 years from now.

Originally built as a way to secure cryptocurrency transactions, blockchain is getting a lot of attention. Vijay Ganesh, a professor and researcher at the University of Waterloo, will lead a discussion with blockchain experts to look beyond the hype to a promising future.

The Future of Cybersecurity | 3:10 p.m.

Final remarks by Stephen Watt, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, will wrap up the day’s conversations and share what’s next for the Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute.
