A message from the Office of Advancement.
Are you a Waterloo faculty or staff member, or a Waterloo retiree? If so, you’re invited to the Keystone Picnic.
On Friday, June 7, join us from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the DC Quad. We’ll have live entertainment, a BBQ lunch, popcorn, cupcakes, cotton candy and more. For those who work in the evening, we’ll be hosting a special event for you in the SLC from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Food for both events will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Look for a special Save the Date postcard in your mailbox soon.
If you’d like to help out with the picnic, we have a number of fun volunteer positions available. You can find more details and a volunteer form online.
The Keystone Picnic celebrates the can-do spirit of Keystone donors and volunteers in raising more than $1 million to support student programs and services each year.
Please consider bringing a toonie to the picnic to help support student wellness programs on campus.
This is the fifth in a seven-week series looking at the stories in Waterloo's Global Impact Report.
Millions of people undergo what has become routine laser eye surgery. Laser technology is now very common, but that wasn’t the case in 1985 when Donna Strickland, a professor in the Faculty of Science, was working on her Nobel Prize-winning research.
Strickland co-developed chirped pulse amplification which enabled the most intense laser pulses ever created. The technique greatly expanded the uses for lasers and is applied today in laser eye surgery.
Strickland knows first-hand how curiosity and rigorous inquiry can lead to a great invention, either directly or by furthering our knowledge of how the world works.

Jesse Gibbon is returning home, and the star studded offensive lineman won't even have to change his colour scheme after his hometown Hamilton Tiger-Cats selected the Geography and Environmental Management student second overall in the 2019 CFL Draft last Thursday night.
"I am so incredibly proud of Jesse who has worked so hard to earn this feeling, we're all very happy for him and his family," said head coach Chris Bertoia.
"Jesse has been a major factor in the rebuilding of our program here at Waterloo and is extremely dedicated to his craft. Being drafted to the CFL is no small feat, let alone going second overall, and I am very thrilled he can continue his football career down Highway 6 in Hamilton. He is an exceptional young man who will continue to put the work in everyday to make his team successful."
Gibbon is the first Warrior to be selected in the opening round since Chris Best, another offensive lineman who went fourth overall to Saskatchewan in 2005.

The Grebel Gallery, located in the heart of the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement at Conrad Grebel University College, is showcasing “New Fraktur,” an art exhibit by Grebel alumnus Meg Harder. Visitors will be treated to works that draw on fraktur folk art, an imaginative and densely detailed illuminated calligraphy, historically produced by early Mennonite settlers to Ontario. Fraktur was traditionally made to venerate important religious and cultural texts and was displayed in everyday contexts like the walls of homes and in the covers of bibles and hymnals.
Tonight at 7:30 p.m., community members are invited for a guided tour of the exhibit and the opportunity to hear from the artist. For more information, check out the Conrad Grebel website. The exhibit will run until October 25, 2019.
The United Way Waterloo Region Communities organization will be hosting its second annual Spirit Awards tonight.
The University of Waterloo has been nominated for two awards: one in the Outstanding Workplace Campaign (Large Organization) category, and another in the Outstanding Volunteer Contribution category. Another nominee in the Outstanding Volunteer Contribution category, Landon Jennings, was a Waterloo co-op student who worked with the University’s United Way Campaign committee.
Representatives from the University’s United Way Committee will be in attendance.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
