On June 17, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the University of Waterloo announced the launch of the NRC Waterloo Collaboration on Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and Cybersecurity. The centre will be an innovation hub for artificial intelligence research that contributes to intelligent logistics. The partnership announcement took place in the RoboHub space in Engineering 7.
"This collaboration centre brings together leading researchers to make significant advances in artificial intelligence for Canadians and Canadian businesses,” says Iain Stewart, president of the National Research Council of Canada. “We are proud to partner with the University of Waterloo and look forward to the success of this exciting collaboration."
Housed on the University of Waterloo campus, the Collaboration on Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, and Cybersecurity brings together 20 researchers and students from the National Research Council of Canada and the University of Waterloo.
“Fundamental research is made stronger through collaboration,” says President Feridun Hamdullahpur. “This new hub offers the National Research Council and the University of Waterloo an opportunity to make significant strides that will develop Canada’s strength in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the Internet of Things, and expand on our legacy of global impact.”
The National Research Council of Canada and the University of Waterloo have been collaborating on computer science research and development for over 10 years. The National Research Council of Canada is the Government of Canada’s largest research organization.
Recently, the Equity Office joined the Working Group on Sexual and Gender Diversity in a re-branding of the LGBTQ+ Making Spaces program. Working closely with Creative Services, a new visual identity was created. The new visual indicator and logo are more reflective of the values of the program and more easily identifiable by members of the campus community. The new visual indicators are displayed in the offices, work stations, or other locations adjacent to one of our space makers across campus.
LGBTQ+ Space Makers is an entirely volunteer program, made up of those who have completed the LGBTQ+ Making Spaces training and have committed to providing a welcoming and supportive network for all members of the LGBTQ+ community, including (but not limited to) lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning individuals.
Our Space Makers are committed to maintaining the confidentiality of an individual’s identity, such as their gender identity or sexual orientation. They are not counsellors, but are available to listen, provide referrals to LGBTQ+ supportive people and programs (both on and off-campus), and bring issues of concern to the appropriate parties on your behalf.
There are currently over 123 affirmed LGBTQ+ Space Makers across campus, all of who are now listed on our website. To learn more about the program, upcoming workshop dates, how to become a LGBTQ+ Space Maker, or a Making Spaces trainer, please don’t hesitate to contact us at equity@uwaterloo.ca or visit our website.
A message from the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences.
The Propel Centre for Population Health Impact will be winding down operations by June 28, 2019, following an organizational review earlier this year. Arrangements are being made to ensure existing Propel commitments to its partners are being met, and work is under way to assist Propel staff in locating other opportunities.
The Faculty of Applied Health Sciences has been proud to host Propel as a research centre since 2013, and as a national research program of the Canadian Cancer Society since 1998. The Centre has made significant contributions to public health research, graduate student training, and service to the public health and chronic disease prevention fields across Canada and beyond.
The Faculty will continue to support a significant range of public health research, including in the areas of mental and global health, aging, addictions and youth behaviour.
Parties looking to learn more about current and future public health research in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences can contact Eugenia Xenos Anderson.
