Correcting the narrative with Susan Aglukark

A message from the Office of Indigenous Relations (OIR).
In recognition of National Indigenous Languages Day, the University of Waterloo welcomes celebrated Inuk artist Susan Aglukark for Nomad: Correcting the Narrative - an immersive multimedia journey through the past generation of Canadian Inuit life. Blending Inuktitut and English with her signature contemporary sound, Aglukark shares personal stories and cultural history while shedding light on the impacts of rapid change, colonization, and community resilience.
The event takes place Tuesday, March 31, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Quantum-Nano Centre (QNC 0101), with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. for mingling and refreshments. A Q&A session will follow the keynote. Registration is appreciated but not required.
Practicing Difficult Conversations and other notes

"As part of the VR for Workplace Wellbeing initiative, the Conflict Management Office (CMO), in collaboration with the Staff Excellence Fund, are providing all University of Waterloo staff (full-time, part-time, contract, and student staff) with the opportunity to participate in workshops that explore how virtual reality can support you in preparing for difficult conversations," says an announcement from the CMO. "Ovation VR uses AI-driven avatars to simulate challenging scenarios such as performance reviews, job interviews, and conflict resolution. By allowing you to practice these interactions and receive feedback, this immersive tool can help you build confidence and reduce workplace stress."
"Individual consultations are also available if you would like personalized support for a specific situation and want to explore how Ovation VR can help you build confidence beforehand."
To register, email Lynn Long at l3long@uwaterloo.ca.

The Integrated Teaching Support Unit is encouraging members of the University community to register for the 2026 University of Waterloo Teaching and Learning Conference because space is filling up fast – for lunch! "We are already at 50 per cent capacity for lunch," says a note from conference organizers. "Registration for the in-person day will remain open until April 15, 2026, or until we reach capacity for lunch in-person at Federation Hall."
"Once we reach capacity, you will still be able to register for the online day, and for in-person day without lunch. Please note that food options will be limited campus, as most Food Services locations are closed between the winter and spring terms."
Register ASAP, or there will truly be no such thing as a free lunch.

"Looking for more ways to engage in reconciliation with Indigenous culture and community?" asks the Centre for Peace Advancement at Conrad Grebel University College. "Join the Office of Indigenous Relations and Mennonite Central Committee for a meaningful evening of learning, reflection, and community conversation as they welcome Phyllis Webstad, the woman who founded the Orange Shirt Society. The event will be held on March 24 at the Conrad Grebel Dining Hall."
Registration and additional details can be found on the Office of Indigenous Relations events page.
Upcoming office closure
The Office of the Vice-President Research and International, including the Office of Research, will be closed today for professional development. The doors will be locked. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, March 10.
