Inspiring voices for International Women’s Day

Join the Faculty of Health for a powerful International Women’s Day panel celebrating this year’s theme, “Gain to Give.” This event shines a spotlight on women who have strengthened their communities and organizations through volunteerism, philanthropy, leadership, and service.

We’re bringing together 4 accomplished women, guided by a skilled moderator, for an inspiring conversation about the impact of giving back and the many ways women lead with purpose. You'll get the opportunity to ask your questions, and walk away with practical insights and connections to fuel your own impact!

The event will take place online via Zoom. Attendees will receive the access link by email the day before the event.

Colleen James

Colleen James

Colleen James is a Regional Councillor and the founder of Democracy in Action, a community initiative dedicated to strengthening civic participation and amplifying community voices in Waterloo Region. With over 15 years of municipal government experience, she works to break down barriers to engagement and ensure all residents feel included in shaping their community.

She is also the founder of Divonify Incorporated, where she partners with organizations locally and globally to advance equity, inclusion, and systemic change. Recognized for her leadership, Colleen received the 2024 Public Service Excellence Award from Women of Dignity International and was named a Woman of Influence in local government by Municipal World.

Jillian Flemming

Jillian Flemming 

Jillian is a senior recreation professional with 18 years of experience in municipal recreation and currently serves as Director of Recreation for the City of Waterloo. An AHS alumna, she holds a BA in Recreation and Leisure Studies from the University of Waterloo and a Diploma in Public Administration from Western University. Her career has focused on marketing, special events, and sport tourism.

Leading with authenticity and transparency, Jillian empowers teams to deliver excellent customer service and inclusive programs. As a passionate, and dedicated volunteer, her 25+ years of volunteer service with community nonprofits have earned her recognition as a Waterloo Region 30 Under 30 honouree and recipient of the AHS Alumni Volunteer Award.

Dr. Nurin Jivani-Tajdin

Dr. Nurin Jivani-Tajdin

Dr. Nurin Jivani-Tajdin is a University of Waterloo alumna and pediatric cardiologist with leadership experience in global health across North America and Africa. Driven by a deep commitment to children with congenital and acquired heart disease, she works to advance care and equity in resource-limited settings.

As a physician, mother, and leader, she champions women to step into leadership with confidence and purpose. Fierce yet compassionate, her work is rooted in mentorship, capacity-building, and creating lasting, transformative impact for children and communities worldwide.

Diane Choi.

Diane Choi

Diane Choi's work centers on community impact through leadership, service, and sport. She has contributed to university athletics through marketing and event operations and served as a Sport Development Coordinator for the U SPORTS Women’s Hockey National Championship. In her third year as Men’s Hockey Team Manager, Diane recently led Hockey 101, introducing the sport to international students and first‑time fans.

Her experience spans the Canadian Student Leadership Conference, Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment, and now with the Canadian Olympic Committee, continuing to create meaningful, inclusive fan and community experiences. She is passionate about being a visible role model who proves that women from all backgrounds belong and can thrive in sport.
