University Records Manager set to retire

"Please join me in congratulating Chris Halonen on his retirement from the University of Waterloo," writes Jason Testart, Director, Information Security Services. "His last day of on the job will be August 31, 2023."

Halonen joined the University in 2009 as University Records Archivist with the Library, where he worked with departments to transfer records documenting UWaterloo’s history to the University Archives and assisted with the development of the University records management program. In 2012, Chris took on the role of University Records Manager where he’s been responsible for maintaining the WatCLASS University records retention schedules, and providing advice and assistance to University employees in managing the University’s administrative information.

"Over the years, Chris provided support to the University’s Document Management Steering Committee and its successor, the Administrative Information Governance Committee," Testart writes. "He also assisted with the development and implementation of Policy 46 – Information Management, which replaced earlier policies for records management, University archives, and information security."

"Recently, Chris has been responsible for the privacy reviews carried out as part of the University’s information risk assessments of new IT and information management initiatives, to help ensure the safeguarding of personal information collected and used by the University, and our continuing compliance provincial privacy legislation."

The University’s Chief Information Officer, Gregory Smith, will lead consultation and discussion about a permanent reporting structure for the University Records Management function. "In the interim, I will be overseeing the function, and privacy reviews as part of the University’s information risk assessment process," Testart's message concludes.

Math to host inter-faculty workshop in September

The Faculty of Mathematics will host a Math+X Inter-Faculty Research Workshop with a theme on Data+ Computation for the 5 Global Futures, on Wednesday September 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in DC1301/1304.

"The goal of the workshop is to initiate inter-Faculty, interdisciplinary research collaborations that address the 5 Global Futures which the University of Waterloo has identified in its Waterloo at 100 Strategic Vision to address the most pressing challenges for humanity and our planet," says a note from the Faculty of Mathematics. "Aligned to our academic and research strengths, the 5 Global Futures reflect the many changes happening in our region, country and world: Economic Futures, Health Futures, Societal Futures, Sustainable Futures, and Technological Futures."

Faculty members from any of Waterloo’s 6 Faculties who are interested in exploiting data and computation for attacking their research problems related to the 5 Global Futures are invited to attend.

The registration deadline is Wednesday, September 6.
