Description
Do you need an easier way to organize materials in LEARN, address accessibility, and incorporate multimedia? In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use the LEARN course templates to add text, insert links to online resources or LEARN tools, and embed video. These templates do not require HTML coding. The templates can help improve student navigation and enhance the look and feel of your course.

Getting Started in LEARN (CTE6656)

This session will introduce you to LEARN (D2L Brightspace), Waterloo's course management system for presenting course activities and resources in on-campus and fully online courses. By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Use the LEARN environment to communicate with your students via Announcements and Classlist
Make decisions around the most effective way to organize your course material in the Content area
Set up the course assessment scheme in the Grades area
Use provided resources to support exploring more of the tools available within LEARN on your own
Depending on time and interest during the session, we may have the opportunity to explore other LEARN tools such as discussions, dropboxes, and/or quizzes.
This session also includes a general overview of considerations for copyright and how to incorporate course reserves into your LEARN site.

What will you do when a student arrives late to your class? Dominates a discussion? Tells you that your course is much harder than all their other courses? These are everyday issues that all faculty member experience. In this workshop, you will become aware of issues common to the teaching environment (whether in class or online) and how they influence class dynamics, and you will work to devise strategies to handle these issues. We will also consider the impacts of the potential strategies developed in terms of learner motivation and engagement.

Description
How do we know whether our students have gained new skills and knowledge as a result of our teaching and assessments? In this session, we will examine how assessment decisions are made in the context of course objectives and constrained by class size and grading time allotted. We will address principles of feedback and evaluation of student work as well as practical implementation tips. Participants will leave with the knowledge required to start an assessment plan and to approach assessments as opportunities for learning.
