Office of Research hosts inclusive research tools webinar to identify and address barriers

A message from the Vice-President, Research and International.

A question that often comes to the Inclusive Research team from researchers is “what are the top three things I can do to embed EDI in my work?” In response, a virtual webinar on “Inclusive Research Tools: Identifying and Addressing Barriers” has been scheduled for Monday, October 28, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. This session will help researchers identify ways to understand potential barriers that may exist in their research program, project and/or teams and will provide ideas for concrete actions to meaningfully address them. Please register to receive the Zoom link to participate.

About the Inclusive Research Resource Hub

The Hub is a resource library of important documents focused on EDI to support the UWaterloo community as they integrate EDI into their research designs and teams. The Hub was created as part of the Inclusive Research Team’s commitment to ongoing development and capacity building to support equitable and inclusive research practices.

So long WatSAFE, hello Regroup Mobile

After almost a decade, WatSAFE, the University's emergency notification system app, has ridden off into the sunset. The University has retired WatSAFE and replaced it with the Regroup Mobile app. 

WatSAFE was launched in the fall of 2015, a different era when you consider that the University made sure it was available on BlackBerry as well as Android and iPhone devices. WatSAFE itself replaced a nascent emergency SMS/text messaging system on campus with the transition to push notifications.

But enough about WatSAFE. Regroup Mobile is now Waterloo’s sole emergency notification system.

Download the Regroup Mobile now to receive instant multichannel alerts and updates on your phone in critical situations. Regroup Mobile’s emergency notification system features a user-friendly interface and a multi-channel approach that includes SMS, voice calls, emails, app push notifications, and desktop alerts. For instructions on how to download the app, and for recommended settings, check out this new Knowledge Base article.

The emergency desktop notification tool will transition to Regroup’s AdHocAlert desktop notification tool for both Windows and macOS devices. If your device is managed by the University, this will be automatically installed. 

Something new offered by Regroup Mobile is an option for adding temporary notifications via the app for visitors to campus including guest lecturers, parents, contractors, and co-op employers. Those hosting guests are encouraged to integrate the visitor emergency notification system link into event planning and communications.

The Library: Empowering learning and research

 A message from the Library.

The Library is excited to share a new brand, celebrating the Library’s position as a partner in the learning and research that happens at Waterloo. 

The Library is at the heart of the University; it provides access to distinctive collections, services and resources to everyone in the campus community and beyond. Library staff support the creation, discovery, sharing and use of knowledge through research, teaching and community collaborations and partnerships.  

To celebrate this new brand, we bring you a collection of stories that showcase a few recent examples of the wide-ranging ways library staff empower learning and research. 

CBB Seed Fund launch and other notes

"The Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology (CBB) is so excited to launch the eighth round of our annual Seed Fund," says a note from the CBB. "The CBB Seed Fund is designed to encourage multi-disciplinary research initiatives across UW faculties and facilitate new interdisciplinary collaborations that involve partners from diverse institutions, sectors, and jurisdictions."

Successful applicants can receive up to $10,000 for projects in the core stream. Additionally, recipients can be awarded up to $15,000 for projects in CBB's priority funding pool: Digital Health. Visit the CBB website to learn more.

The Registrar's Office has announced that the fall 2024 final examination schedule is now available to view online. The exam period will run from to Friday, December 6 to Thursday, December 19, with emergency days scheduled for Sunday, December 15 and Friday, December 20.
