In Data Science, you will take courses in computing systems, data analytics, database management, statistics, statistical and machine learning as well as core mathematical subjects like algebra and calculus. You will learn from leaders in this evolving field and have opportunities for hands-on learning experiences.
You can enter the Data Science program in your second year and pursue a Bachelor of Mathematics in Data Science through either the regular or co-op system of study.
Admission requirements
Students from within the Faculty of Mathematics may apply to transfer into Honours Data Science (Bachelor of Mathematics) after successfully completing ten courses. This means that the earliest you can apply for transfer will be after successfully completing your 1B term.
There is a slightly higher tuition structure for Honours Data Science and thus successful transfers must be completed within the first three weeks of the term into which you are admitted (before the fee deadline). The last term you can be admitted is in the third week of 2B. Admission after the third week of 2B requires approval from the program director.
This program is a competitive entry program. Successful completion of the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. The minimum requirements are:
- A MAV average of 65%.
- A CS average of 70%.
- 10 passed courses.
- An overall average of 60%.
- No more than 2.0 failed units.
- Have completed CS 136.
The ten courses that students complete to be considered typically include:
- MATH 135, 136, 137, 138
- CS 136, 136L
- PHIL 228
- One communications course
If you meet these requirements and are interested to learn more, complete this form to get more information. For additional information please contact the Data Science advisors.
Note this plan and its admissions are completely separate from the BCS Data Science program.
Note: Data Science (BMath) cannot be combined with any other Faculty of Mathematics Honours or Joint Honours academic plan including Computer Science, Statistics, and Biostatistics. It cannot be combined with a Statistics, Computer Science or Computing Minor.
