The newly formed Ecohydrology Group for Gender Equality in Geosciences (EGGEG) held its inaugural meeting on April 14th and was well attended by 17 group members.
The main objective of our group is to facilitate solution-oriented discussions to promote peer mentoring and community building within our research group.
The first meeting focused on imposter phenomenon and subsequent meetings will follow a similar format whereby we use a literature-based approach to discuss gender issues in geosciences (e.g., gender bias).
Research2Reality (R2R) produces high quality, short movies showing today's research, which informs tomorrow's reality. Their videos feature the innovative, cutting edge research being conducted by world-class researchers in Canada.
The R2R crew visited the Ecohydrology labs in 2014 to see the group's work in action and interview Philippe on the importance of the study of Ecohydrology. Watch the video!
The next day, Philippe enjoyed a boat tour of the mangroves of Naples Bay guided by Bill Mitsch.
.
Philippe attended the KAUST Athenaeum: Dissolution and Precipitation – Implications for Energy Geo-Engineering (February 7-10, 2016). The event was organized by Prof. J. Carlos Santamarina and the KAUST Upstream Petroleum Engineering Research Center.
Our students –Tatjana Milojevic, Stephanie Slowinski, Christine Ridenour, Adrian Mellage, Tariq Aziz, and Danny Oh – did a great job presenting their research at the Canadian Geophysical Union – Hydrology Student (CGU-HS) meeting on Saturday. Student researchers from universities across Ontario attended and presented their research.
For the fourth time in a row the Ecohydrology Research Group hosted World Wetlands Day (WWD) at the University of Waterloo. The event included 30 poster presentations by students and researchers from University of Waterloo and Western University, followed by a distinguished lecture by Prof. Jos Verhoeven from Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
Philippe was part of the Canadian delegation to the on-site review of the (international) research training group (RTG) 1829 "Integrated Hydrosystem Modelling" (PI: Olaf Cirpka), conducted by the German Science Foundation (DFG) on January 26-27. The Universities of Tübingen, Stuttgart and Hohenheim participate in the RTG, with University of Waterloo as the main international partner. The other Canadian delegates included Ed Sudicky, Dave Rudolph and Nandita Basu. For more information on the RTG, visit
Hans Dürr is quoted in Water Canada's news article, which discusses plastic pollution in marine environments and reports that US President Barack Obama has signed a bill prohibiting the manufacture or use of microbeads in personal care products in the United States.
Hans noted that in some parts of the Great Lakes, our lab has found 500,000 pieces of plastic per square kilometer.
The Canadian government is also developing regulations that will prohibit the manufacture and sale of personal care products containing microbeads.
