Steffanie Scott is a Professor in the Department of Geography & Environmental Management in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo. She is co-author of the 2018 book, Organic Food and Farming in China: Top-down and Bottom Up Ecological Initiatives. Her research unearths land-based sustainability practices, food systems, and organic sector developments in China and Canada. It examines the challenges of implementing ecological agriculture practices and solutions adapted to local conditions in China, through engagement of farm businesses, government, and the general public. Steffanie is co-investigator on a Tri-Council-funded research project on food security consequences of COVID-19 and countermeasures in China. She is also researching the urban food system and urban food security in Nanjing, China through the Hungry Cities Partnership.
Steffanie is past president of the Canadian Association for Food Studies (2012-14), past co-chair (2007-11) of the Food System Roundtable of Waterloo Region, and Associate Editor in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems - Social Movements, Institutions and Governance. Steffanie has published papers in Agriculture and Human Values, Food Policy, Ecology and Society, Canadian Food Studies, Local Environment, and the Journal of Agriculture Food Systems and Community Development.
Steffanie is a board member and past co-chair of the Food System Roundtable of Waterloo Region, and co-founder of the Waterloo Food Issues Group. She supervises graduate students in Geography & Environmental Management as well as in Economic Development & Innovation, Environment, Resources & Sustainability and Planning. Steffanie has also supervised research on local food systems and local economic development in Ontario.
