EFAS students and peer leader

Due to COVID-19, the world is experiencing a number of unique challenges right now and we recognize that there is a lot of uncertainty. The safety and wellbeing of our students, instructors, and staff will always remain our most important priority. As such, the decision has been made to offer our summer intensive EFAS (iEFAS) program virtually through an online format.

While the situation currently does not allow for us to offer the iEFAS program in the traditional face to face format, the English Language Institute at Renison University College remains committed to providing quality English language instruction this summer through a vibrant virtual learning experience. It remains our goal to help you meet the English language requirement for the University of Waterloo, in order to continue in your degree studies.

Our summer term dates will be July 22 to September 4, 2020. Placement testing and orientation will happen July 22 – 24, and courses will begin on July 27.  All days and times listed will be in EDT (Eastern Daylight Time). You will be able to access your courses online starting July 27 through LEARN, the University of Waterloo’s online learning management system.

In iEFAS, you will have the opportunity to interact directly with experienced TESL-certified instructors and other students in a small, virtual classroom community.

You will be able to enjoy a combination of:

  • Real-time class instruction based on a curriculum that is benchmarked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a global standard in English language proficiency.
  • Pre-recorded instructional videos that you can rewind and play repeatedly
  • Online instructional activities to ensure you are engaged in your learning
  • Individual feedback about your work directly from your instructors during regularly scheduled timeslots

In addition to the virtual classroom community, students will be able to participate in virtual student engagement opportunities, including online social activities specifically designed to practice your conversational English with enthusiastic Peer Leaders, and regular workshops that will help you develop your skills as a successful university student.

At the Renison English Language Institute, we are committed to working together to provide you with quality language instruction and helping you achieve your goals. Even though classes will be online, you will be part of a warm community of people who will be dedicated to helping you succeed.

Students registered for iEFAS will receive more information about the start of iEFAS during the weeks of June 15 and July 13.  In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. We look forward to welcoming you to the Summer iEFAS program.
