The FAUW Board is pleased to announce that salary negotiations with the University of Waterloo have come to a successful conclusion and the negotiating teams have signed a three-year agreement effective May 1, 2018.
The agreement includes, among other things, a scale increase of 2.0% in 2018 and 2.15% in 2019 and 2020, and an across-the-board salary adjustment of $850 per member.
Of note is a commitment from the University to increase its annual health and dental benefits contributions for faculty by $400,000. That amounts to something like a 15% increase or about $325 per member. How this money is put to use will be determined by the Pension and Benefits Committee.
Also of note is that in the lead-up to negotiations, the Lecturers Committee identified a salary equity issue affecting the 15% of our members who are lecturers. The current salary structure (floors and thresholds) is such that lecturers reach the thresholds earlier in their careers, which has an undue negative effect on lifetime earnings. As part of this settlement, FAUW and the University will establish a working group tasked with finding the right solution to this problem, and the recommended changes will be retroactive to May 1, 2018.
The FAUW Board is pleased with the results of the negotiations and would like to thank the members of the negotiating team for their excellent work.
