Settlement reached through mediation
FAUW has reached a one-year salary settlement with the University of Waterloo, providing a 2.6% across-the-board scale increase, effective May 1, 2026.
This settlement exceeds current inflation, which is approximately 2.1%, and therefore represents a modest real salary increase for FAUW members in the coming year. It also helps maintain Waterloo’s position relative to comparator institutions and supports continued competitiveness in the academic sector.
FAUW recognizes that salary negotiations are taking place in a challenging financial and economic context. We appreciate the efforts of the University’s administration to reach an agreement under these circumstances and to engage constructively throughout the process.
At the same time, FAUW remains focused on longer-term salary trends. While comparator outcomes such as the University of Toronto’s recent 2.5% settlement provide useful reference points, issues related to cumulative salary erosion, particularly those arising in 2022 have not yet been fully addressed and remain important priorities for FAUW going forward.
Looking ahead, FAUW will continue its dialogue with the University and will advocate for decisions that prioritize employees and the core academic mission as part of the institution’s long-term financial planning. We thank our members for their engagement and support, and we remain committed to sustaining a strong and competitive academic community at Waterloo.
