Admission requirements

All applications to the departmental Fire Safety Certificate program will be reviewed on an individual basis.

For questions about admission requirements into all three (3) of the University of Waterloo Mechanical Engineering graduate programs (MEng, MASc, and PhD) please refer to the the departmental website.

Admission to the Mechanical Engineering Master of Engineering degree program with Graduate Diploma in Fire Safety will be based on a combination of academic record and relevant post-baccalaureate industry experience.

Required:

• A four-year Honours Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Science, Mathematics or equivalent from a recognized University

• Minimum overall standing of 75% in the last two years or 78% in the last year of the Honours Bachelors Degree

Recommended:

• Three years post-baccalaureate engineering experience in industry or the equivalent thereof

With appropriate industry experience, individuals who may not meet the above requirements for academic standing should apply; their applications will be reviewed and admission determined on a case-by-case basis.

Entrance requirements for study in the PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering are normally:

• A thesis-based master's degree from a university of recognized standing with a minimum A- (80%) standing and demonstrated research capabilities

• Three letters of reference, from professors and/or employers (a minimum of two must be academic)

• Proof of competency in English (if applicable). A score of at least 550 is required in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), along with a minimum score of 4.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE). In order to be admitted to PhD candidacy, applicants must have demonstrated original research capability. Therefore, to enter the UW PhD program, graduates who have obtained a master's degree without the requirement for successful completion of a research thesis must satisfy the Department that they are able to carry out independent research.

• An honours Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in an acceptable discipline, from a university of recognized standing, with at least a B (75%) standing,
• Two letters of reference, from professors (they must be academic),
• Proof of competency in English (if applicable). A score of at least 550 is required in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), along with a minimum score of 4.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE).
