Data-Backed Urban Solutions at the Capstone Symposium

This spring, the University of Waterloo campus hosted the inaugural Faculty of Environment Capstone Symposium, bringing together more than 500 students, faculty, alumni, and industry partners. The event filled collaborative spaces across EV1, EV2, and EV3, serving as a showcase for graduating students to present their final research posters and walk attendees through their findings.

The symposium marked the culmination of an intensive eight-month process. Working in teams of four to five, students collaborated directly with external partners to address complex, applied problems at the intersection of enterprise, environment, and society.

Many of the featured projects were developed in partnership with the Future Cities Institute founded by CAIVAN. Through these capstone initiatives, student teams tackled practical challenges connected to housing, mobility, infrastructure, and urban systems.

For FCI, the symposium highlights the long-term value of experience-rich education and cross-sector partnerships.
