Warming Hospitals with Data Centres: UW Students Tackle Waterloo Region's Resource Limits
What does excess heat from a data centre have to do with warming a local hospital?
On July 29, students in the WE Accelerate program at the University of Waterloo presented data-backed concepts to tackle that exact kind of challenge. As Waterloo Region faces growing water supply constraints and resource pressures, the Future Cities Institute connected regional leaders with WE Accelerate to frame a design challenge centered on the water-energy-food nexus.
Working within real municipal constraints, student teams analyzed local infrastructure bottlenecks and proposed practical, scalable solutions. Among the featured concepts, one team presented plans to capture excess heat generated by regional data centres and redirect it to warm local hospitals. Another team proposed deploying Silva Cell systems to manage urban stormwater runoff while expanding tree canopy coverage across the region.
Facilitated by Chris Rennick from the Engineering Ideas Clinic, the showcase brought students, faculty, and institute representatives together for an interactive question period. Students fielded questions on feasibility, implementation, and design mechanics before wrapping up the collaborative showcase.
Connecting emerging student talent directly to live municipal challenges to build practical, scalable solutions is central to FCI's mission. By pairing student ingenuity with real municipal resource constraints, the institute continues to support evidence-backed strategies for resilient communities across Waterloo Region.
