Mean Girl Feminism and its Antidote: Reciprocity

Friday, October 3, 2025 12:00 pm - 1:50 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Abstract

Mean girl” feminism is a rhetorical stance for white women and girls that encourages sarcasm, irony, and sassiness in order to secure their own position in power structures. Nguyen identifies and analyzes four mean girl archetypes: the bitch, the mean girl, the power couple, and the global mother. Nguyen argues that, with these four strategies, white feminists co-opt and mimic the anger and resistance experienced by people of color and marginalized groups for their own power and prestige. Professor Fulfer will join the talk with Nguyen, where together, they offer reciprocity as a practice of care and as a tactic that combats white feminist co-optations of intersectionality.
