Anne Innis Dagg was a biologist, researcher, and author best known for her pioneering work in giraffestudies, a field which she is credited with starting. She is also known for her research on Canadian wildlife and her research and advocacy around gender-based equity issues in academia. She was instrumental in the creation of the Women’s Studies program (now known as the Gender and Social Justice program) at the University of Waterloo. She is a UWaterloo alumnus (1967) and has been affiliated with the university in many ways since. She received the Order of Canada in 2019, and honourary doctorates from the University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, McMaster University and Mount Saint Vincent University. Her passing is a loss to the greater academic community but especially felt within the Gender and Social Justice program.
