Opportunities, benefits and risks of using ammonia as aviation and maritime fuels

Tuesday, June 9, 2026

Our group publishes a new review article, titled "Ammonia as a fuel for shipping and aviation: Opportunities, environmental benefits and risks" in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews. This review provides a comprehensive assessment of the potential use of renewable ammonia as an alternative fuel in the transportation sector, specifically focusing on aviation and shipping, exploring its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Key challenges such as corrosion, leakage, spill hazards, and associated costs are thoroughly discussed. The article also identifies potential gaps between ammonia emission reduction targets and future energy pathways.

This work is in collaboration with teams from University of Aveiro and University of Oviedo.

Compliance with the 2020-2029 national emission ceiling for NH3

The figure above shows the compliance with the 2020-2029 national emission ceiling for NH3 in 2020, as well as the difference (in %) between the projection of NH3 emissions for 2030 (including, in some cases, additional measures to be implemented) and the 2030 national emission ceiling for NH3.
