Today on Earth Day, we at Waterloo International celebrate the connections between internationalization and sustainability in higher education generally and more specifically at the University of Waterloo. In honour of Earth Day, we are looking back at past activities from the last year, while also looking forward to the year ahead.

The University of Waterloo is pleased to announce that it is joining the Scholars at Risk (SAR) Network, effective immediately. Waterloo is proud to join this established global community of institutions and individuals whose mission is to protect scholars and to promote academic freedom.

The University of Waterloo has signed a broad-based Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD), India, with the aim of supporting a range of activities across talent, research, and community areas. "We are delighted to further strengthen our connections with one of the world's outstanding universities. There is great potential for collaborative work between our two communities that will not only have an impact within our respective universities, but also much beyond." says Prof.

The University of Strathclyde and University of Waterloo signed their first Research Agreement in 2017. Since that development, our partnership has been highly collaborative, with a joint colloquium in 2020 and now the Strathclyde/Waterloo Joint Transatlantic Funding Call. Waterloo International has been thrilled to steward the Fund with our colleagues at Strathclyde.

Representatives from the University of Waterloo (Canada) and the University of Warwick (United Kingdom) are exploring ways in which each of their burgeoning esports activities can be enriched by trans-Atlantic international collaboration.

Waterloo and Warwick have been long-standing international partners, with successful research collaborations, student exchanges, and a joint academic programme.

The University of Waterloo’s Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) is, with a number of its international partners, leading action on ways in which nanotechnology expertise in higher education can advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). These actions have been primarily identified as the development of talent, the advancement of research for global impact, and the promotion of sustainable and diverse communities.

The University of Waterloo is thrilled to announce that it is joining the Academics Without Borders (AWB) Network of Canadian universities and colleges as of 2022. This exciting membership will provide Waterloo with the opportunity to be engaged in advancing the capacity and quality of higher education globally.

On 26 January 2022, Prof. Ian Rowlands – associate vice-president, international – participated in the Government of Indonesia’s Kick-off Meeting of IISMA Partnership Week. Invited as one of four presenters from amongst the Government of Indonesia’s approximately 75 global partners, Prof. Rowlands shared Waterloo’s experience in hosting 30 IISMA (Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards) students during the Fall 2021 term. More than 200 individuals – from across Indonesia and around the world – attended the two-hour virtual meeting.
