Filemaker Server

Description

The Math Faculty Computing Facility (MFCF) provides a server to host FileMaker databases developed and used by members of the Faculty of Mathematics. The server hardware (virtual or physical), operating system, and installation of FileMaker Server is managed by MFCF.  Users run FileMaker Pro on their machines and connect to the databases from the client machines.  Databases meant for multi-user access should be hosted on the MFCF FileMaker server.

Inputs

The owner/developer of a database provides the database to be hosted and the user security details (users and access).

Outputs

Users are able to connect to the server from FileMaker Pro and use the databases to which they have been provided access.

Default: The FileMaker database provided by the owner will be installed on the server and made available to the users designated by the database owner.  MFCF administers the hardware (virtual or physical), operating system, and installation of FileMaker Server.

Optional: MFCF provides limited support for the Faculty Appointments database.

Excluded Items: MFCF will not assist with the design, creation, or programming of FileMaker databases.

Responsibilities

MFCF

MFCF maintains the FileMaker database server. This includes regular updates to the operating system and FileMaker Server.

MFCF will coordinate FileMaker Server upgrades with department administrators to ensure compatibility between FileMaker Server and FileMaker Pro versions.  MFCF will not accept lengthy delays in upgrading FileMaker Pro clients.

MFCF will perform imports of databases on the server.

MFCF may help with converting databases to be compatible with new versions of FileMaker Server.

Departments

Department administrators/staff are responsible for developing and maintaining any databases they want to use.  MFCF does not have expertise in FileMaker database development.

Department administrators/staff are responsible for upgrading FileMaker Pro clients on a yearly basis until Claris changes the release cycle.  New versions are available on the IST Webstore.  All departments must upgrade regularly so they don't prevent others from moving to new versions.
