Finding ways to build your community
By Darren McAlmont University RelationsMake the best of your university experience this fall and beyond. Whether you’re new to campus or are a veteran student, we want you to be an active part of building the #UWaterlooCommunity.
Dedicating time to your studies and assignments is important, but so is forging new friendships, strengthening connections, taking care of your physical and mental wellness, and having fun. It’s all about finding the balance that’s right for you.
No matter what your interests are, we have a host of exciting clubs and extracurricular activities to help you build your community at Waterloo.
Orientation is the perfect opportunity for new students to connect with classmates, explore the unique traditions of Waterloo and your faculty, and learn what it means to be a Warrior. If you missed registering in advance, don’t worry – come to the Ask Me booth in the SLC to get your wristband and gain access to activities and events designed to make you feel right at home.
The Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA) has a full week of events planned just for you! Attend classic events like our outdoor carnival with a Ferris wheel and other fun rides, arcade games, tasty treats and even Sex Toy Bingo. Mark your calendars with all the great events and follow @yourwusa for opportunities to get involved all year long.
It is no secret that being physically active has a positive impact on your overall wellbeing. Whether you prefer to stay active with indoor or outdoor activities, Warriors Athletics and Recreation has something for you. Our campus facilities include fitness centres, outdoor fields, a skating rink, pool, rock climbing wall, golf simulator, disc golf course, esports and more. All levels and abilities are welcome.
If you’re into sports and love to cheer from the stands, then be part of the thrill and keep up with the latest games schedule so that you don’t miss out. Check out the top 10 moments of 2022-23. Who knows, maybe your team will be part of the next highlight reel.
Finding the balance between school, work and pursuing your interests is one of the keys to success for university life. We encourage you to find a club that matches your interests. Whether you love to sing in a cappella or are a furry pet advocate, there’s a club for you. You also have the freedom to bring your ideas to life on campus by starting your own club to build your community.
As a member of the Waterloo community, you have access to mental and physical health services in a safe, respectful and inclusive environment. Be kind to yourself and get the help you need to support your wellbeing. You can book an appointment through Campus Wellness. You can also tap into the MATES (Mentor Assistance Through Education and Support) program for one-to-one peer support offered by WUSA.
Are you an international student looking to build a community with other students from around the world? Join this peer-supported network to guide you through settling in at Waterloo, the best events on campus, or where to find the best of your favourite foods. Register now to become a member this fall.
As a world-leading institution for innovation and entrepreneurship, we’ve created spaces for you to explore the possibility of turning your ideas into products. Velocity engages entrepreneurially-curious students, supporting them as they discover new possibilities, form and validate ideas, build prototypes, and develop businesses.
If you’re looking to hone your natural leadership style or skills, take advantage of the Student Leadership Program delivered through the Student Success Office. As a bonus, complete the program by graduation and receive a University of Waterloo Certificate of Leadership Development, signed by the University president and associate provost, students.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
