Stephen Soucie
Education Specialist
After years of collaboration, the SVPRO and the Faculty of Engineering have come together to create this position to deepen our commitment to sexual violence and gender-based violence (SV/GBV) education within engineering. Over the course of his three-year term, Stephen will lead the development of innovative and curriculum-integrated approaches to SV/GBV education within MME. The long-term vision is to use the lessons learned from this pilot to inform and scale similar initiatives across all 15 departments in the Faculty of Engineering. Stephen’s new role is embedded within Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering (MME), one of the largest departments in Engineering, marking a significant step forward in our efforts to foster a safer and more inclusive campus.
Stephen brings a wealth of experience in gender-based violence prevention and education. From 2012 to 2016, he was instrumental in the development and delivery of the Male Allies initiative and OHL Onside training at the Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC). He later led Male Allyship programming at the University of Waterloo as part of the UN Women’s HeForShe initiative from 2016 to 2019. Most recently, he has been working with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) to design and implement a restorative justice pilot for unhoused individuals in Waterloo Region accessing services at Thrift on Kent. This initiative included comprehensive training for staff and volunteers.
