Buildings constitute a major component of end-use energy. Next generation technologies embedded in “smart” buildings will remain key to a low carbon energy future. This event was a ‘meet-up’ of academic, industry & government experts who came together to share insights & new ideas for our energy future.
Panel presentations, posters & discussions focused on:
- Panel 1: The Business of Future Low-Carbon Buildings
- Panel 2: Innovation in Achieving Low-Carbon Buildings
- Panel 3: Technologies for a low-carbon future Bust or Bonanza?

The Business of Future Low-Carbon BuildingsPolicy makers have made it clear that both new and existing buildings will need to use much less energy and energy with a much lower carbon content in the future. Our panel of industry leaders will discuss the opportunities and the obstacles to building the next generation of buildings, residential, commercial, and institutional. The discussion will also provide insight into what kind of product will be needed, the role of regulation, technology, workforce, and markets. The renovation and conversion of existing buildings will also be raised. Moderator:Jonathan Enns, Assistant Professor, School of Architecture Speakers:Subhi Alsayed, Vice President of Sustainable Development at Mattamy Homes Adrian Conrad, Chief Operating Officer, The Cora Group Adrian Wang, Director, Innovation and Sustainability, Tridel Richard Marshall, Design Manager, Bird Construction Q&A Session |

Innovation in Achieving Low-Carbon BuildingsOur panel of building scientists and builders will provide insights into the challenges of implementing new technologies to meet more demanding codes and targets. The discussion will focus on design engineering, construction practices, building codes, regulations, and related standards. The increasing challenge of quality, speed of construction, sophisticated mechanical systems, and ever more complex codes and standards will be considered, both for new greenfield sites, increasingly common tight urban sites, and existing building conversions and retrofits. Moderator:John Straube, Associate Professor, Architectural Engineering (ArchE) Speakers:Steve Kemp, Principal, Senior Energy and Sustainability Specialist, RDH Building Science Rob Quattrociocchi, Building and Material Sciences Manager, EllisDon Stephen Montgomery, Mechanical & Electrical Pursuits Manager, PCL Constructors Canada Inc. Dan de la Mothe, Senior Quality Assurance Manager, Melloul-Blamey Construction Inc. Q&A Session |

Technologies for a low-carbon futureWhether new or existing, the buildings of the future will need to use a different mix of products to make buildings work, save energy, reduce carbon, and be easier and faster to build. Our panel of engineers and business developers will talk about developing, implementing, and marketing products that can help save energy and reduce carbon emissions. The role of embodied carbon versus operational carbon, the challenge of convincing designers and builders to place life-cycle cost above initial costs. Moderator:Carl Haas, Professor & Chair, Civil & Environmental Engineering Speakers:Antoine Habellion, Building Science Manager, Rockwool Andrew Oding, General Manager, Sr. Building Science Associate, Building Knowledge Canada Andy Goyda, Canadian Builder Lead/Market Development Manager, Owens Corning Canada LP Hannah Thevapalan, Facade Specialist, Project Manager, WSP Canada Inc., and Scott Armstrong, Senior Facade Specialist, WSP Canada Inc.
