COP25 was the 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It was held in Madrid, Spain from December 2–13, 2019. The conference was chaired by Chile.
Prof. Rowlands (School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability) attended COP25. About 27,000 delegates participated at the conference under the Presidency of the Government of Chile and it was held with logistical support from the Government of Spain.
Goals:
Advance the implementation of the Paris Agreement, Reduce pollution, Build resilience, and Push forward international climate initiatives.
Outcomes:
- Established the "Santiago Network" to help countries cope with climate change impacts
- Launched a dialogue on the ocean and the cryosphere
- Launched a dialogue on land
- Agreed on a new plan of action on gender
- Extended the agenda for action to give a greater role to civil society
