Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) Discovery 2018 Event

The Ontario Centre of Excellence (OCE) Discovery 2018 was an annual conference that celebrated innovation, research, and best practices in Ontario. The conference took place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. 

What was featured?

  • Green House Gas (GHG) reduction projects: A special zone on the show floor showcased GHG reduction technologies and projects 
  • Wearable technology: The conference featured wearable technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) 
  • Cleantech: The conference featured cleantech, health, manufacturing, media, and energy 
  • Young entrepreneurs: Young entrepreneurs demonstrated their innovation 
  • University innovators: Innovators from many universities showcased their ideas and technologies

  • To celebrate Ontario's best and brightest in research and innovation
  • To showcase Ontario innovation
  • To highlight leading-edge technologies and best practices
  • To connect innovators with commercialization opportunities

WISE Team

Elena Zaikova, Postdoctoral Fellow, Biology - talked about her research on microbiome optimization. The current leading area of commercialization is the microbiome of hydroponic systems of controlled environment agriculture, such as greenhouses and vertical farms.

Cristobal Lara, MASc, Civil and Environmental Engineering - Cristobal showcased a new, non-destructive methodology for detecting early decay of distribution wood poles and concrete columns using ultrasonic waves.

Flora Ng, Professor, Chemical Engineering - Flora talked about Cleantech and the innovative sustainable production of clean fuels and high value chemicals from renewables, wastes, and light hydrocarbon.

Khosrow Modarressi, Technology Transfer Manager and Suramya Mihindukulasuriya, Postdoctoral Fellow, Electrical and Computer Engineering - Khosrow and Suramya showed a new way of keeping food fresh and safe with a Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) Treatment Chamber for Liquid Food.
