WISE Energy Day 2018 featured three panel sessions that aimed to discuss current and emerging themes in the sustainable energy sector and beyond. Professor Linda Nazar delivered a distinguished Keynote on the topic of '21st Century Promise of Battery Science for a Resilient Future'.
Panel 1 – Access to Clean Energy for All: Is Innovation the Problem?
The vision is to deliver the next generation technologies, innovations and practical solutions that will drive the costs of energy services to ta level low enough for a revolution in energy access without the need for tax incentives and subsidies. The Affordable Energy for Humanity Global Change Initiative is an emerging international collaboration between the world's leading scientists, technology developers and practitioners on the topic of universal energy access. We believe in a future where modern, clean and reliable energy is affordable and available to everyone.
Our panel of social scientists, technology developers, and industry leaders will provide an insight into global energy poverty, off-grid and mini-grid systems, micro-pico-nano grids, and energy infrastructure challenges from a cultural, social, and environmental point of view.
Panel 2 – Getting to a Low Carbon World: Capture or Utilize?
Carbon emissions from fossil energy pose a global challenge. Will the pathway to utilization of carbon in products prove to be more cost-effective than capture and sequestration? Ambitious carbon reduction initiatives are necessary to lower targeted greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. New technologies, innovative approaches to redesigning existing processes and a long term vision are all key components to making effective and sustainable change.
Our panel of academic experts and industry leaders will discuss the development of emerging technologies and the strategic importance of long range carbon reduction planning for environmental benefits at the local and macro levels.
Panel 3 – Blockchain in the Energy Sector: Bust or Bonanza?
Blockchain is a technology for storing and transmitting digital information that is decentralized, secure, transparent, chronological and reputed to be hackproof (CGI Group Inc., 2017). What are the implications of digitization and data mining for the power & energy sector in the short to medium term? What are the credible technological and policy options that can meet the test of economic competitiveness, sustainable business models, prosumer acceptance and financial viability?
Our panel of industry experts will talk about implementing blockchain solutions that can be a game changer in the power and utility sector but are not yet visible on the market.
