Opening Keynote by Sue Harnett (Rewriting the Code) (2:30 PM)
The Power of a Team: The Importance of Community for Women in Tech
It is very difficult to go it alone in just about anything. It is particularly challenging when your identity is not well represented. You may feel like an outsider, question your path, or even change direction to one that feels more comfortable.
I will share how my participation in teams increased my confidence, supported individual and collective success, and created lifelong relationships. I found my first team on the basketball court at 10. My current team works on facilitating community and belonging for college and early career women in tech. With 26,000 global members, it’s my biggest team ever, and we are far from finished!
Speaker
Sue Harnett (Founder and CEO of Rewriting the Code)
Sue Harnett is changing the game for young women entering careers in computer science and engineering. As a consultant to her alma mater, Duke University, she learned that women were exiting their computer science degree programs and giving up on pursuing their highest achievement because they lacked support. Her solution was to create a nationwide community for women in computing that was not limited by university borders or size.
That’s how her current venture, Rewriting the Code was born. With over 24,000 students and early career members from 110+ countries, women are finding rich digital and IRL communities that celebrate their unique identities as they work together to graduate and find work with many of Rewriting the Code’s corporate partners. Rewriting the Code’s community of women is committed to completing the work required to change the face of technology. She attributes the largest part of her success to creating teams of highly motivated colleagues who embrace a culture of inclusion, independence and motivation to do great things every day. And together, they’re unstoppable.
