Black and gold forever
#UWaterlooForever
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the University of Waterloo is taking steps to limit the spread and risks of the disease in our community. With caution and concern for our alumni, we have made the difficult decision to move Alumni Weekend and Alumni Black and Gold Day events online.
While we can’t reconnect in the way we planned, we hope you will join us for the virtual events on September 25 and 26, 2020.
Virtual Fun Run
Thank you for participating in the 35th anniversary of the Fun Run. While there have been many changes over the years, this event still remains a favourite among alumni and the UWaterloo community. Despite current circumstances, we loved seeing the participation of everyone in their personal Fun Run!
Virtual Fun Run registrations raised $120 to support UW Mates and an additional $640 through the Alumni Happy Hour Box.

Crisis, motivation, and coming out the other side
Friday September 25 | 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. (EDT) | Online
Join us for a conversation about the unique opportunities that lie in times of crisis.
The year 2020 has been a trial for people across the globe. For many, this year’s crises have also inspired growth and motivation. In this virtual panel, the co-founders of Masks for Covid share how a global pandemic can influence motivation and spur innovation. During the event, we’ll explore three crucial topics at the heart of their story:
- The personal motivations behind their company
- The community that made Masks for Covid possible
- The obstacles and limitations of creating their product
Meet the speakers
Jackie Lee (BSc 2006) - Co-founder - Masks For Covid | Founder - Recruit My Friends
Jackie Lee graduated from the University of Waterloo Honours Science program in 2006. During her undergraduate she started her first business Recruit My Friends which is a referral-only recruiting firm for Engineers in North America and the UK. Recruit My Friends has incubated a Careers Platform for engineers to track and manage their careers. Jackie's passion lays in helping engineers meet their potential and in bringing high performing teams together at critical growth times. While studying at the University of Waterloo, Jackie raised $1 million in donations and she continues to fundraise for Ontario hospitals during the Covid-19 crisis. Jackie is an active angel investor in software start-ups and is dedicated to building the Canadian economy.
Dr. Brian Li (BASc 2009) - Co-founder - Masks For Covid | MD, FRCPC (Internal Medicine, Cardiology)
Dr. Brian Li completed his undergraduate degree in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He went on to complete his MD, residency, and fellowship at the University of Toronto. As an interventional cardiology fellow at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center, Dr. Brian Li co-founded and led the team at Masks for Covid to address the crisis of N95 mask shortages by developing a novel, reusable mask. Currently, Dr. Li is completing an advanced Interventional Cardiology fellowship at Stanford University. He is extensively involved in the development of novel medical devices and is a co-founder of Conavi Medical Inc.
Alan Soong (BASc 2008) - Co-founder - Masks For Covid | Manager of Catheter Development at Conavi Medical | BASc Systems Design Engineer
Alan Soong completed his undergraduate degree in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. As his 4th year design project he worked together with Dr. Brian Li, under Dr. Brian Courtney, to develop a novel intracardiac catheter at Conavi Medical Inc. He has since continued to grow with Conavi Medical and is now the Catheter Development Manager. Alongside Jackie Lee, Alan and Dr. Brian Li have joined forces again to help lead the engineering team at Masks for Covid to develop a potentially reusable full face mask with integrated ventilator filter.
Pablo Eder (BSc 2016), Moderator - Chief Revenue Officer, Makeship
Pablo Eder is an entrepreneur who currently works as chief revenue officer at Makeship, a crowdfunding platform for content creators. Pablo currently works with Concept helping entrepreneurs with their new startup ideas. He is an alumnus of the Faculty of Science and graduated in 2016.

Lighthouse Lemonade is low in sugar and does not contain animal ingredients, dyes or preservatives. Take a bottle to the cottage, to a BBQ, use in a killer Tom Collins or heat up a mug of hot lemonade on a cool fall evening. It’s Summer in a Bottle all year long! Last year, our partnership raised $1,300 for the program’s Peer Support Centre, a safe on-campus place for students to seek peer support from trained volunteers. Funds raised in 2020 will be put towards ensuring this newly renamed “Wellness Lounge” is equipped to welcome in-person visitors again soon.
