Ian MacNaughton remembers being like a "kid in a candy shop" when he got the opportunity to pursue a Master's degree in planning, after several years in the work force. "There was an intensity and joy in applying the work experience to new ideas," he says.

MacNaughton (BA '68, MA '71) had also been one of the first graduates of the University of Waterloo's new School of Planning. At the time, it was the only such undergraduate program in Canada.

After completing his degrees, MacNaughton founded MHBC Planning Ltd. in Kitchener. Since then, he has been inducted as a fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners. During his career, he has advised all levels of government and industry on issues of planning and resource management. MacNaughton retains his connection to the University of Waterloo through his leadership on the Pragma Council, a University of Waterloo planning think-tank. He has been a generous donor and an active member of several fundraising committees. MacNaughton has also employed many University of Waterloo graduates, and provides advice and counsel to the School of Planning.

Murray Haight, director of the School of Planning, describes MacNaughton as a "true ambassador" for the University of Waterloo and a "remarkable person, one who cares about the activities of the school and the university."

MacNaughton believes his years in the mid-1960s as a varsity Warrior football player laid the foundation for his professional success. "Football provided a discipline and work ethic that was directly applicable to starting a business," says MacNaughton. "Today there is a thriving planning business with five offices, great partners and employees, many from the University of Waterloo. Every day is different, with a new problem to solve or opportunity to realize."
