"Waterloo was the city I chose over all other cities, and the main reason was the University of Waterloo's influence in the community," says Cartmell. "I wanted to raise our children in a community that believed in higher education, and was a safe, exciting area with lots of growth potential. Waterloo certainly met all of these requirements, as well as allowing me to participate as an alumna with a university I hold in such high regard."
Cartmell has nurtured a strong relationship with Waterloo, serving as chair of the Faculty of Mathematics Alumni Medal Selection Committee while giving presentations to women in math and engineering on balancing career and family life. There is a bursary in Cartmell's name for math students.
While an employee of Equitable Life of Canada, Cartmell was a strong advocate for co-op students and Waterloo graduates. Cartmell has been an active advisory board member for the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist Program (CEBS). She is currently teaching three University of Waterloo continuing education courses.
Recently, Cartmell was enjoying a bottle of wine with her husband on a rooftop in Spain, when a German couple joined them and mentioned they had just attended a conference at the University of Waterloo. Cartmell says, "What a great feeling, to be associated with a well-known, innovative university that connects us with people all over the world."
