Jacob and Ben with their family at UWaterloo Family Day

Written by Jacob McAughey and Ben McAughey

On April 22, 2017, UWaterloo’s annual Alumni Family Day took place at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto. Alumni and their families enjoyed the Centre’s special exhibition Biomechanics: The Machine Inside, along with several exclusive-to-UWaterloo activities such as the EMG Muscle Car, Dexterity Duel, and Brain Hats building and colouring.

Jacob (13) and Ben (10), stepsons of Anna McAughey (Ziembicki) (BA ’01) Sociology, attended the event with their family, and below they answer some questions we posed to them about the day.

Can you tell us about your UWaterloo Alumni Family Day experience at the Ontario Science Center? What stood out to you the most?

Jacob: Our Alumni Family Day experience was very fun and interesting. We learned lots of new things and got to do exciting activities, such as the air-powered space car, which stood out to me the most.

Ben: It was fun and interesting and taught me many things. The thing that stood out to me the most was the fake giraffe that you pump blood into.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about or participated in?

Jacob: The most interesting thing I participated in was the air-powered space car.

Ben: At the space exhibit, the air-powered car.

How long have you been coming to UWaterloo events? If you've participated in our events before why do you keep coming back? What kind of events would you like to see in the future?

Jacob: I have been coming to these events for 5+ years. We keep coming because they are very enjoyable for the whole family. I would like to see more hockey events.

Ben: I have been coming for 5+ years, and yes, I would keep coming back. I would like to see an event at a military centre.

Do you plan on attending UWaterloo? If so, what are you interested in studying?

Ben: Maybe, I’m not really sure. I’m interested in Math and Science and teaching.

Were there any funny or fascinating family bonding moments that you'd like to tell us about?

Jacob: A family bonding moment was when we all got to sit on that chair and spin around using the fake wing. We all had lots of fun.

Ben: When we stuffed food down our throats. (Editor’s note: Ben really enjoyed the buffet lunch.)
