It’s hard to believe that after five years, I am simply done my Psychology and Business degree at the University of Waterloo. No more lining up to buy textbooks, attending lectures, cramming studying for midterms. After all those days and nights sweating over whether or not I would ever graduate, I can’t believe I’m here.

Years to remember

In high school I spent many nights debating whether to study design or business. I made the decision to apply and attend the Arts and Business Co-op program at the University of Waterloo, fulfilling my desire to study both art and business. The ability to shape my own program, complimented with the co-op experience, has shaped the person I have become today, that person being a wildly happy and passionate entrepreneur.

It's raining heavily. I'm sitting with my co-founder Daxal and all-star intern Rachel at the Blueprint/PCH headquarters. Only an hour left before we have to pitch to nearly 400 University of Waterloo alumni at the annual alumni event. Time to hustle. I dispatched our UberX ride and gathered our things.

Alumni Shanghai Chapter Annual Event - Entrepreneurship

The annual event of the University of Waterloo Alumni Shanghai Chapter was held on December 7, 2014. The theme was “Entrepreneurship." As UWaterloo is an incubator for innovations, we aimed to provide a platform for entrepreneurs to present their ventures and business ideas. There are alumni in the venture capital industry as well, so it was an opportunity for UWaterloo entrepreneurs and investors to connect.

Doing My (Small) Part to Build Canadian Tech

I started with a world-class education and took the scenic route to entrepreneurship. I graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1998 with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Stephen Lake, Matthew Bailey, and Aaron Grant are the co-founders of one of Canada’s hottest start-ups, Thalmic Labs. Their product, the Myo gesture control armband, uses electromyography (EMG) and motion sensors to transform your arm into a remote control.
