On Wednesday we celebrated International Women’s Day, but women should be celebrated every day so today we wanted to celebrate the impact Komal Minhas (GDip '14) is having around the world.
Komal Minhas started her company, KoMedia, because she knew she wasn't fitting into other people’s cultures so she figured it was time she created her own. Shortly after founding KoMedia she produced Dream, Girl to tell the “real, complicated, and empowering stories of women and girls from around the world to educate, inspire, and systematically change how females are treated globally."
To share this message Komal drew from her experiences at UWaterloo and created an “innovative distribution strategy that disrupts the way films are traditionally released”. Her strategy worked. “Dream, Girl held a private screening at The White House and sold out their world premiere at the Paris Theatre in NYC. Huffington Post named Dream, Girl the number one ‘Feminist Film To Watch’ and Upworthy called it ‘the film every little girl (and grown up girl, too) should see’.” And to top things off, last August Komal was named to Oprah Winfrey’s Supersoul100 list.
