Chris Fleming (BES '70) has been involved with the University of Waterloo's School of Planning every year since he enrolled as a student in 1965. "It was always hard to get into Waterloo and harder to graduate," recalls Fleming. "However, the results of the efforts of those connected to the University of Waterloo make me quite proud to have been able to have graduated from an institution that has made, and continues to make, such a significant contribution in so many areas."

An Ottawa resident, Fleming was the one who kept the Ottawa Waterloo planning alumni together for more than 20 years. He is currently semi-retired, and known as a successful real estate planner and developer who has an appreciation for the public good and the concept of balanced development.

Fleming, a key fundraiser for the planning school, has never turned down a request for assistance and has been an active member of the Pragma Council, a planning think-tank and alumni advisory body. He has lectured at Waterloo, mentored, and recruited many students.

His favourite memory while a student was a particularly difficult cartography class where many students worked together over the Christmas break to complete the course work. "We pooled our skills and helped each other until everyone had finished all the assignments," says Fleming. "This was a great lesson in team effort . . . I still remember the late nights and pizzas, but we all made it and graduated."
