The Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology is a catalyst for advancing bioengineering and biotechnology research and innovation through industry collaborations and partnerships.  

More than 130 faculty members, from every faculty on campus, are actively engaged with the centre, working in collaboration to provide a resource of varying expertise.

Our mandate is to build healthy, active partnerships between centre researchers and corporate members through collaborative projects, mutual interest building, and networking events.

A Message from the Centre's Director

At the Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology, we have over 130 researchers working in areas as diverse as new pharmaceutical delivery systems, lab testing on technologies as small as a computer chip, better and lower cost imaging systems, and software solutions for healthcare.  Our researchers span all departments of the faculties of engineering and science, and includes researchers from other faculties as well. The common thread between researchers is a dedication to understanding how technology can work in conjunction with biology and people to make a better world.

The Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology is focused on partnerships.  Success in this area requires strong partnerships between researchers, students, industry, healthcare and government. For this reason, the Centre welcomes members from these communities and encourages them to join the Centre and participate in our research.  We host industry focus days, seminars, workshops, student events, and help build the right teams to tackle the toughest problems.  Come join us, and work towards a better, healthier world through technology.

  1. June 5, 2018French-Canadian biomedical engineering Summer School and Bio-Hackathon

    Paris, Compiègne, June 18-22 2018

    The French-Canadian BIOMEDInnov Summer School will take place June 18 to 22, 2018, and will engage students designing innovative new technologies for health and medicine.   The program focuses on needs-driven design to develop clinically relevant biomedical technologies. Travelling to France to attend the summer school are 22 students (from all universities) and 6 researchers from the University of Waterloo who were involved in the international exchange.

  3. June 1, 2018CBB Members Outstanding performance award winners

    Congratulations to CBB members who have been named Outstanding Performance award winners!

    Vice-President, Academic & Provost George Dixon has announced the winners of the 2017 Outstanding Performance Award winners.

    The University of Waterloo established an Outstanding Performance Fund to reward faculty members for outstanding contributions in teaching and scholarship. The award came into effect in May 2005 in accordance with the 2003 Faculty Salary Settlement.

  1. July 3, 2018CBB Workshop Series

    July 3 Workshop: An Introduction to Bioinformatics (5:30 - 6:30 pm)

    Go on a virtual scavenger hunt where you will have to find and identify the correct nucleotides to break the code. Find and uncover the ‘clues’ using databases like Gene Bank, and programming in Python to uncover the correct gene sequence and break the code.

  2. July 10, 2018 CBB Workshop Series

    July 10 Workshop: CAD and 3D Printing for Biomedical Design (4:30pm - 6:30 pm)

    Use the SolidWorks Computer Aided Design Software to learn how to quickly and effectively design three-dimensional models. You will learn the main CAD techniques through a guided instructional session, followed by a chance to work with mentors on designing and 3D printing a biological model of your choice.

  3. July 17, 2018CBB Workshop Series

    July 17 Workshop: Microbiology in Life (5:30pm to 7:30pm)

    Lab skills are essential for any wet-lab research. In this workshop, you will learn about fundamental microbiological wet lab techniques as you are guided through various lab activities including Streak Plating and Microscopy. You will also hear from Dr. Trevor Charles, an expert in microbiology research, about his exciting work in the field.
