The Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology (CBB) is excited to host University of Oregon's Dr. Andy Karduna on June 6, 2024 for a special talk titled: Shoulder Shenanigans: A Comical Dive into Biomechanics, Vision, and Proprioception.
All are welcome to join us in BMH 1621 at 1:00 p.m. and enjoy snacks and coffee following the presentation in the adjacent fireplace lounge/BMH 1633.
No registration required.
About the Talk
We are interested in studying proprioception of the upper extremity. This effort has mainly focused on understanding how people position their arm in the absence of vision. We have recently taken advantage of the introduction of high quality, low cost virtual reality googles to extend this work to include the integration of vision into our joint position sense studies. These goggles allow for us to manipulate vision in a limitless way in virtual space. We can dissociate the visual representation of the hand from its actual position in space to investigate which is weighted higher by the central nervous system.
Speaker Bio
After having spent his entire life on the east coast, Dr. Karduna accepted a faculty position at the University of Oregon in 2002. Originally from New York, he did his undergraduate work at MIT receiving a BS in Mechanical Engineering. For graduate studies, he earned his MS from Johns Hopkins and his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, both in Biomedical Engineering.
From 1996 to 2002, Dr. Karduna served as a faculty member in the department of rehabilitation sciences at MCP Hahnemann University (now Drexel University) in Philadelphia. His main research interest is in the area of upper extremity biomechanics, with an emphasis on kinematics, EMG analysis, proprioception and occupational disorders.
In additional to being a Professor in the Department of Human Physiology, Dr. Karduna also served as Associate Dean in the Graduate School from 2017 – 2021.
