One of the goals of the Can-Peat project is to establish a comprehensive metadata repository for peatland metadata across Canada, specifically related to carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. It is being developed to elevate our collective understanding of peatland carbon cycling.
The Canadian Peatland Data Portal will function as a searchable web-based tool that allows users to find data that pertains to their needs by providing detailed information for each dataset and where to find it.
Our work will reflect our ongoing commitment to upholding the FAIR and CARE principles. These principles are informing how we build the technology behind the repository, and how we will ensure clarity around data ownership, licensing, and control over data in the platform.
FAIR principles for scientific data management and stewardship are supported by the Tri-Council (i.e., NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC) and provide guidance for making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.
CARE principles for Indigenous Data Governance complement the FAIR principles and other movements towards Open Data. They support Indigenous Peoples’ rights and interests by recognizing that data should be designed in accordance with the following principles: Collective benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics.
The repository is being developed in partnership with the Waterloo Climate Institute.
It will operationalize FAIR Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability and CARE (Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsibility, Ethics) principles.
