The Stork Awards in German Studies are made possible by a donation from Fred and Ruth Stork, and their children Michael and Marion, as loyal friends and supporters of the University of Waterloo, the Kitchener-Waterloo community, and the Waterloo Centre for German Studies (WCGS).
These travel awards are given out annually to encourage student participation in a recognized institutional Canadian-organized German language or cultural studies program abroad.
Applying for the Stork Awards
There are three categories of Stork Awards:
1. For students registered at the University of Waterloo. Awards, valued from $500 up to $1,500 per student, are presented annually to full-time undergraduate or graduate students at the University of Waterloo. Selection will be based on participation in a recognized institutional Canadian-organized German language or cultural studies program abroad (e.g., Waterloo in Germany, Ontario-Baden-Württemberg, Canadian Summer School in Kassel) and a one-page letter of intent. Interested students must submit an application by March 1. View the Stork Awards in German Studies Application. Students must confirm their registration and/or acceptance in the program before funds will be processed. Students must also declare if they are receiving other travel awards to subsidize their travel expenses. (In the past, this has not prevented students from receiving a Stork Award.) Recipients are required to submit a one-page report one month after their return from Germany.
2. For students registered at Canadian universities other than the University of Waterloo. Awards, valued from $500 up to $1,500 per student, are presented annually to full-time undergraduate or graduate students registered within the first four years of their program at a Canadian university.
3. For students registered on the Canadian side of the Joint MA in Intercultural German Studies. Awards, valued at up to $2000 per student, are presented annually to full-time graduate students enrolled in the Joint Intercultural German Studies degree program. The WCGS Director in conjunction with the Graduate Studies Officer will identify candidates and select recipients each fall. Recipients are required to submit a one-page report one month after their return from Germany.
