MA and PhD Programs at the University of Calgary

Wednesday, November 21, 2018

The School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures (SLLLC) at the University of Calgary is inviting applications for its MA and PhD programs in Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LLAC).

 In the following specializations:
  • German
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Applied Linguistics
  • Transcultural Studies
The program represents an innovative response to the demand for inter- and transcultural knowledge and competence in the global community and seeks to promote the application of a set of critical skills that serve to advance the understanding of language and culture, applicable beyond the parameters of the academic context. All students receive a competitive funding package, pedagogical training, and the opportunity to teach undergraduate language courses. In addition, a wide variety of professionalization workshops and research seminars prepare students for a range of post-degree careers.
The program offers students a course of studies that, in all its nuances, invites cross-cultural and cross-linguistic initiatives, while at the same time advancing language proficiency and deeper investigation in one target area. At a time when boundaries between and among disciplines are permeable, the program provides opportunities for interdisciplinary inquiry. Students may study texts and visual media from a single language community, or they may perform comparative research across the cultural traditions represented in SLLLC. Students may also pursue applied linguistics research in any of these languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish). Benefiting from the relatively small size of the program, students enjoy personal attention and interaction with professors in an open, collegial atmosphere.
